Making your character appealing to the audience is a very vital process in design, they need to identify with the character, understand them and sometimes it can be hard to get past certain prejudices/stereotypes of the world we live in.
It is also important for the character to fit in with it's environment, it helps ground the story and capture the audience. the world must abide by it's own rules consistently or the viewer will not submit themselves to 'Suspension of Disbelief'
“But when it comes to visualising the world, it creates a huge challenge for the artists. Paris is so beautiful and immediately appealing; the idea of a rat in a kitchen is not. How can you make the humble hero of your movie visually engaging enough to compete with the legendary beauty of Paris?" John Lasseter, executive producer page7
