Often initial character design is affected by how the character will need to be animated no matter how well thought out it was to begin with. Some features of a design might just not be possible in terms of realistic movement, 3D sculpts are a way to visualise the character from all angles before spending time rigging to find mistakes and changed needed after all that work.
“Sometimes you don’t know how well a character design is going to work in the computer until you start to see it move. Making it move can become so difficult that functional changes will need to be made for animation. I try to solve those problems in sculpture so the design can look good from all angles.” Greg Dykstra- sculptor pg58
