Because 'UP' is set in a world very similar to our own, it holds the same laws of physics etc, it is important for smaller details like what the house is made of, to be considered thoroughly. The viewer would be dragged out of their involvment with the story if a sturdy heavy house made of brick was being lifted up by balloons.
“we cast the house the same way you would select just the right actor for a role. We took field trips into Oakland and Berkeley looking for old, charming small houses. Carl’s house is a combination of several houses we found and liked. Since it needed to float, we stayed away from heavy looking elements like brick and stucco and even heavy rugged styles like Craftsman. Victorian is a great blend of light, ornate, and old world. It seemed to fit the bill quite well” Pete Docter- director pg66
