'The Art of Toy Story 3'

“A lot of times, animators will do a test scene for a new character, which is one of the hardest things to do, because it’s a scene out of context. When I was teaching, I would make the students answer questions: ‘You have a character in a room- where were they five minutes ago? Where are they going to be five minutes from now? How old are they? What do they like? What do they dislike? You have to build a world around your character. Unless we actually build a certain amount of that world, which you’ll never see, the performance won’t feel authentic. It’ll feel only an inch deep, and you really want something that’s deeper than that in order to reach an audience.”  Bobby Podesta- Supervising Animator pg28
