“In the four years that elapsed between Toy Story and Toy Story 2, computer graphics made enormous strides. Computers became much faster, and new software was developed that enabled the Pixar artists to create subtler animation, more believable textures, more realistic lighting, and more complex environments. But these innovations introduced a problem that the artists would face again on Toy Story 3: how to take advantage of their new tools and techniques while preserving the look, charm, and characters of the first film. As Toy Story 2 neared completion, ‘We had to be really careful that everyone who came to see the sequel would instantly recognise it as Toy Story,’ explains Ash Brannon. ‘The characters looked the same, it was the same world. But we had incredible new lighting tools and rendering tools that gave us more realistic depth of field. The textures on the characters were much more detailed and realistic looking. The movie had a whole new dimension, a new depth to it.’ Charles Solomon Pg 15
