A technical artist must be up to date with the newest technology, understanding the possibilities and difficulties of different rigs, but it must also be understood how this can affect the characters design.
“The artists at Pixar are so good at creating the character models and rigging the characters, we’re casting new characters that utilise new technology and new ways of working. We’re able to create toy characters we wouldn’t have been able to do before, like Stretch the Octopus. She’s one of those really stretchy toys: we couldn’t do that on the earlier movies and make it look so good. She’s translucent, with glitter embedded in the rubber.” John Lasseter Pg 26
“She’s an interesting character with a very stretchy skin and complex articulation controls for animation that we’ve never done before. The main characters created in Toy Story and the ones added in Toy Story 2, like Jessie and Bullseye, were so strong and loved by our audience that we immediately realized we wanted to bring them back together in Toy Story 3. It was a good feeling to bring characters to bring characters back to life but it was also a challenge. We wanted to completely rebuild them, taking advantage of today’s technologies while remaining true to each character as seen in the previous two movies.” Guido Quaroni- Supervising Technical Director- pg 26
